Geroezemoes is the Dutch word for those atmospheric background noises you get in pubs. The gentle murmuring of voices, the clinking of glasses or tinging of a spoon hitting a porcelain cup. When I think of old brown bars here in Amsterdam, “geroezemoes” is the soundtrack that starts playing in my head.
My interest in history and sitting in bars drinking beers with friends led me to start looking into the histories of those spaces in which we ordered our drinks. The stories of yesteryear connected to these bars are also closely linked to the history of the city and the people that frequented these bars.
To share this marvel of feeling connected to history by sitting in bars my idea is to start a tour of historic bars in Amsterdam. The aim is to take people to spaces in which you can feel like you’re stepping into the past. Let’s give it up for beers and historical anecdotes!
I’m currently working on short pieces about the Karpershoek, In ‘t Aepjen, De Druif, ‘t Gasthuys, Café Chris, Café Brandon, Papeneiland, ‘t Smalle, Hoppe, De Dokter, de Sluyswacht, Schiller en Café Américan. Any further recommendations?
